CERGE-EI to Mark 35 Years of Ideas That Matter with Anniversary Week

15 May, 2026

CERGE-EI will mark its 35th anniversary with a special week celebrating academic excellence, public debate, and the community that has shaped the institute over three and a half decades. Under the theme 35 Years of Ideas That Matter, the anniversary week will bring together CERGE-EI community to reflect on the institution’s achievements and look ahead to the ideas that will shape the future of economics, policy, and society.

The week will open with the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Nobel laureate Philippe Aghion, one of the world’s leading economists and a pioneering scholar of innovation, growth, and creative destruction, and a member of ECS Board of CERGE-EI. His visit will also feature the public lecture “The Power of Creative Destruction: Rethinking Capitalism,” offering audiences a rare opportunity to engage with one of the most influential economic thinkers of our time. The lecture will be streamed on our CERGE-EI YouTube channel.

The anniversary week will culminate in the 35th Anniversary Gala, a festive gathering honoring CERGE-EI’s legacy in research, education, and public engagement. The Gala will celebrate the people and ideas that have contributed to CERGE-EI’s development into a respected international academic institution and a vibrant intellectual community based in Prague.

As CERGE-EI celebrates 35 years, the anniversary is not only a moment to look back, but also an invitation to look forward. Through frontier research, rigorous graduate education, and open public debate, CERGE-EI remains committed to advancing ideas that matter—ideas that help us better understand the world and contribute to a more informed future.
